Pooley Bridge boasts stunning views, historic sites and fantastic local amenities and is ideally situated for plenty of outdoor and water based activities or for just simply relaxing and taking in the tranquillity of the lake at Ullswater. This beautiful village is situated at the northern end of Lake Ullswater, just by the River Eamont. The name Pooley Bridge derives from a large pool in the River Eamont, which gives the name Pooley; then in the 16th century, a bridge was constructed across the river, hence the name Pooley Bridge. Pooley Bridge itself offers wonderful views of the lake and surrounding hillside, as well as some fantastic walks in and around the village. To the north of the River Eamont stands Dunmallard Hill where Iron Age remains can be found. The centre of Pooley Bridge reveals yet more history in the shape of St. Paul's Church, which dates back to around 1868, and is flanked by delightful old stone houses. If you don't want to venture out of the village, Pooley Bridge offers several village shops, two tea-rooms and three pubs, ideal if you want to take a break from walking or mountain biking. It has to be said this picturesque little village has it all, with its spectacular views, historic sites, local shops and places to eat as well as being on the doorstep of one of England's most beautiful lakes.
